Diving in South Florida What does South Florida have to offer scuba divers? How about warm water, good visibility and varied marine life! Add to that an abundance of interesting wreck and coral reef dives and you end up with the most exciting and enjoyable diving in the United States. You don't need to go all the way to the Caribbean to find colorful tropical fish and coral gardens! We have most of the same marine life that divers encounter in the Bahamas and rest of the Caribbean right here in South Florida. Water Temperature and Visibility With year round water temperatures ranging from approximately 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit, a swimsuit is sufficient for summer diving while a full 3-5 mm wetsuit is perfect for diving in the winter months. While underwater visibility varies from day to day and is dependent upon the site location and ocean conditions, Miami and Key Largo typically experience 40-80 feet. Wreck Diving South Florida is famous for its diverse and exciting artificial reef program. A less than 30-minute boat ride will put you on top of one of these sunken treasures laden with coral and fish. Come face to face with giant Goliath grouper, large schools of baitfish, jacks and barracuda. To get a better idea of what it looks like down there, check out our Florida Wreck Diving Gallery Reef Diving Coral reefs in Miami? You bet! Miami and Key Largo reef sites are numerous and vary from scattered patch reefs to parallel spur and groove formations. A typical site rests in 25 feet of water and may have coral heads rising to within a few feet of the surface. Both reef and wreck sites host a plethora of marine life including colorful tropical reef fish, snapper, grouper, eels, rays and of course- the occasional nurse shark. You may also notice numerous hard and soft coral and sponge formations. With an hour of bottom time at each shallow site you are practically guaranteed to find some interesting creatures.
